British Seagull

I bought a 1983 British Seagull Silver Century 4.5hp SN# ESC43GG3 and am contemplating installing a motor well to keep things neat and streamlined.
Any input or suggestions would be welcome. It looks like after lofting everything into cad that the concept is sound and fits well with the exception of not being able to use the mounted stock fuel tank. I'm not sure what it will take to make this Gull run from an external tank but I'm sure that it is but a minor challenge. Any ideas?

Interior demo is complete, next is grinding down the seams where all of the interior bulkheads were taped to the hull, pressure washing to remove all interior paint. I have removed the companionway hatch and am preparing it for resurfacing. The forward hatch has it's first coat of primer and has been wet sanded waiting for a second coat of primer . I'll get some more pics soon.

  1. Looks like a very sound concept, and a good idea.
If you were to widen the well to accommodate turning the motor thru it's entire swing would be a great feature, much more maneuverability.

  2. I worry that when you have the wind astern or on the quarter and you want to bring the weight in the boat aft to lift the bow the well will act like a break. The design of the Alacrity seems to make this point of sail one of its strong points and I would not want to risk spoiling it. I am putting my petrol tank in a semi sealed box in the starboard cockpit locker with a drain out through a transom fitting.

  3. I would also not want to lose all the storage space of the starboard cockpit locker or the potential for an aft locker, see Little Grace blog. We get the petrol tank, all the shore lines (which are over-sized for extra security), six large fenders, a bow fender, three boat hooks (that will make sense in time), stirrup pump, folding bucket and two paddles in that space with room to spare. Sorry to post anonymously but Google makes it a pain to do otherwise. David
